In the latest installment of our Meet Our Underwriter series, we meet up with Trish Audit, a Sales and Service Underwriter on our Personal Insurance Solutions team and recent winner of the 2018 Underwriter of the Year award from the Canadian Broker Network. The Underwriter of the Year award honours underwriters that display excellence in underwriting and who consistently show a “go the extra mile” attitude.
Let’s learn a little more about Trish.
You’ve worked at Gore Mutual for 18 years. What are some of the things you love about working here?
One reason why I love working at Gore Mutual because our people genuinely care about each other and are always willing to help. Our leaders listen to everyone’s ideas and are constantly looking for new ways to make our team more effective. And I’m proud to work for a Canadian company with a rich history of almost 180 years in this industry.
Our history, culture and our commitment to giving back is what makes Gore Mutual a great place to work.
You recently received the Underwriter of the Year award by the Canadian Broker Network. How did you feel when you found out that you won?
At first, I was really surprised because I felt like I was just doing my job. I was also honored and grateful. I’ve been overwhelmed by the love and support I’ve received from so many people across the country. And as I accepted the award, I thought about how lucky I was to be recognized by these amazing brokers.
The Underwriter of the Year award is given to those that display excellence in underwriting and have a “go the extra mile” attitude, among other things. Why is it important for you to “go the extra mile” when working with brokers?
I always try to do my best because our brokers are our partners. When we help our brokers, we’re helping our customers too. So, when a broker calls me and asks for something outside of the box, the first thing I do is see if there’s a way that we can help them. I always try to find a solution!
What’s your favorite part about being an underwriter?
My favorite part about being an underwriter is working with my brokers. I’ve had the same relationships with many of them for almost 10 years now. Making a real connection with my broker partners is important for building trust so that we can work together, offer support and build positive relationships.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Years ago, when I had to do a presentation, Heidi Sevcik, who is now our CEO and President, could see I was nervous and came over to give me a pep talk. She told me to be myself and know my material. If I did those two things, I would do well.
What’s something people might not know about you?
Most people probably don’t know that I’m a landed immigrant. My family came to Canada when I was just nine months old. My first language was Portuguese; I didn’t learn how to speak English until I went to school. I was born on a little island in the Azores called São Miguel, which is known as the ‘Green Island’ because of it’s rolling hills and fences made from black igneous rock. In some ways, São Miguel is like stepping back in time since it’s not unusual to see a horse drawn cart zip down the cobblestone roads.
We still have lots of family in the Azores and we’ve gone back to visit three times. But our last visit was over 20 years ago so we’re planning to visit again soon with our kids.
